Patient Awareness & Empowering Clinicians – Ania Lipowska

Ania Lipowska of the University of Illinois (United States) presented on patient awareness and empowerment in esophageal cancer care, highlighting the significant delay in seeking care due to low public recognition of dysphagia as a cancer symptom. She discussed the current screening paradigms and their limitations, particularly in identifying younger patients and those without chronic GERD. Dr. Lipowska proposed increasing public awareness through campaigns, collaborating with primary care to establish lower referral thresholds, expanding screening guidelines, and advancing policy and advocacy for better infrastructure and reimbursement.

This presentation was delivered as part of the webinar on Esophageal Cancer in 2026 hosted by Dr. Dan Patel of Vanderbilt University Medical Center, United States.
