Esophageal Anastomotic Leaks: Definition, Risk Factors, and Early Detection – Omar Awais

In this presentation, Dr. Omar Awais, complex redo esophageal surgeon at UPMC, provides a comprehensive overview of esophageal anastomotic leaks following esophagectomy. The session reviews definitions and classification systems, highlights key patient- and procedure-related risk factors, and explores differences between cervical and intrathoracic anastomoses. Emphasis is placed on the critical importance of early recognition and timely intervention to mitigate morbidity and improve patient outcomes. This video establishes a clinical foundation for understanding leak development and informs subsequent management strategies.

This presentation was part of the webinar on When Anastomoses Go Wrong: Mastering Leak Management After Esophagectomy held on December 18, 2025. Moderated by Monisha Sudarshan and Ernest Chan the webinar ended with a brief panel discussion and responses to audience questions.
